Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab.
While the visuals are a notable improvement for DC, the film follows a familiar superhero formula with a forgettable villain and a lack of creativity in exploring the protagonist's powers. There's a noticeable tonal inconsistency between the protagonist's aversion to killing and his family's casual approach to violence, which detracts from the overall experience. Overall, it's not a bad movie, but it lacks innovation and fails to utilize its talented cast to their fullest potential.
